Air Source Heat Pumps in Alberta: What Actually Works and What the Numbers Tell

Air-source heat pumps are promoted as a highly energy-efficient, low-carbon solution capable of reducing operating costs, yet their performance in Alberta’s cold climate remains debated. This session explores design approaches that actually work, and the math that supports them. Drawing on real-world experience, manufacturer perspectives, and performance modeling, we examine cold-weather operating limits and performance implications, including impacts on cost and carbon emissions.

Through discussion and audience engagement, participants will gain practical insight into how air-source heat pumps can be effectively applied in cold climates.

Andrej Simjanov

Andrej Simjanov, P.Eng. is part of the High-Performance Buildings team at Remedy Engineering, where he works on mechanical systems design, energy modelling, commissioning, integrated systems testing, and building performance optimization. His work focuses on helping commercial and institutional buildings perform as intended, with particular emphasis on practical low-carbon design, HVAC system integration, operational performance, and the gap between design intent and real-world operation. Andrej brings a balanced, evidence-based perspective to building decarbonization, combining technical analysis with an understanding of cost, constructability, controls, commissioning, and long-term operation.

Chase Hayden

Chase has been with Trane for 10 years, gaining extensive experience in the design, installation, and operation of a wide range of commercial projects. He is especially passionate about projects that apply optimized system solutions. Chase holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Calgary and is a Professional Engineer registered with APEGA. He is also an associate member of the CSA B52 committee, which oversees Canada’s primary refrigeration safety standard. Outside of work, Chase enjoys spending time with his family, including his four young children.


Kyle Shummoogum

Kyle has been involved in the local Mechanical Construction Sector for nearly 20 years. Focusing on the Application Sales side of the business, he has extensive experience in manufacturing, building automation and HVAC Equipment. Kyle focuses on design assistance for contractors and consultants who prioritize energy-efficiency & minimizing their operational carbon footprint. Kyle obtained a Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Calgary in Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering. Kyle is also active in the industry and a former Southern Alberta Chapter - ASHRAE President. In his spare time, Kyle enjoys following the Calgary Flames and golfing.
