Beyond Compliance: Building Resilience Through Evolving Codes

Workshop Session

As climate related risks intensify in Alberta and across Canada, resiliency in buildings is becoming a critical priority for the real estate and building sectors. This session will examine how recent and upcoming building code changes are driving the adoption of more resilient building practices capable of better withstanding extreme weather, maintaining occupant safety and comfort, and supporting long-term asset performance.

Participants will gain insight into methods of navigating discussions around investment and risk management. Come explore this evolving, unique relationship between resiliency in buildings and our increasingly evolving building codes and how this relationship impacts the future of our built environment.

Alexandra Kodyra

Since 2019, Alexandra Kodyra has collaborated with industry, community partners, and students across Canada's building and construction research sector. Her experience includes project management, strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, and external communications. She has led the development of project reports, literature reviews, educational resources, and training materials covering topics ranging from building science to broader social and sustainability concepts. Alexandra has also supported the preparation of grant and funding applications to advance applied research opportunities and has facilitated knowledge dissemination through conferences, workshops, summits, seminars, and other engagement events. Since 2023, she has served on SAIT's Sustainability Development & Advisory Council, supporting the advancement of institutional sustainability initiatives and priorities.

Leo Lu

Leo is an Architectural Technologist and researcher at the Green Building Technology Access Centre (GBTAC). Since 2019, he has been coordinating GBT research and business promotion regarding performance analysis for high-performance building, including valuable experience in energy and thermodynamic modelling. With the 7-year experience of data analysis and research of energy efficiency improvement, he has great passion in applying novel technologies on analytical tasks and developing new tools to acquire essential information under the scope of GBTAC projects. Leo earned his Master of Science in Biochemistry at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) in R.O.C. (Taiwan) in 2016 and diploma in Architectural Technologies at SAIT in 2019. Leo is interested in passive energy efficient usage and advancing material development for systematic solutions in building challenges.
