Home Electrification Lessons for Cold Climates: From Data to Decisions

Municipalities are increasingly looking for practical ways to support residential energy transition while balancing affordability, emissions reduction, and long-term community outcomes. Drawing on The City of Calgary's experience and the Home Electrification Calculator (HEC), this interactive session explores what residential electrification modeling can teach us about making informed decisions in cold-climate communities.

Through real-world scenarios and discussion, participants will examine how factors such as home age, heating system choices, solar PV, and electricity pricing influence energy use, emissions, and costs. The session focuses on the lessons emerging from the analysis and how data-driven insights can support policy, program design, and community-scale energy transition.

Brent Downey

Brent Downey is a Corporate Environmental Specialist with The City of Calgary. He leads city-wide initiatives focused on sustainable buildings, including BenchmarkYYC, the Calgary Green Buildings Guide, and the Green Building Priority Stream. His work bridges technical building performance objectives with municipal policy, program delivery, and industry collaboration, and he co-developed Calgary's Home Electrification Calculator.
